TX House Chairman under investigation by Travis County DA

Rep. Kino Flores, D-Palmview, chairman of the House Licensing and Administration Committee, is under investigation by the Travis County District Attorney’s Public Integrity Unit regarding trips he took on planes owned by special interests - specifically, whether he reimbursed them properly and reported it correctly.

———————————– UPDATE: If Mr. Flores did, in fact, reimburse the LaMantia family - which owns L & F Distributing Co. and has interests in a South Texas horse-racing track - it doesn’t show up during a quick search of the Ethics Commission website. I’m still digging through Kino’s ethics reports.

In May 2005, The “Friends of Carol Keeton Strayhorn” group reimbursed Greg LaMantia in the amount of $447 for what was labeled “air travel.” But that’s all I can find so far…. ——————————————–

Roy Minton, his lawyer here in Austin, says the trips appeared to be worth about $1500 and that rumors swirling around about the South Texas rep potentially resigning are untrue - although his primary opponent, Sandra Rodriguez, is apparently ready to stepping into the special election if he bows out.

The plane belongs to the LaMantia family of South Texas, which has gambling and beer licensing interests, both of which are issues regulated in Mr. Flores’ committee.

Mr. Minton said the chairman reimbursed them properly for the expense of the plane rides, which he said were “one or two” rides between the Rio Grande Valley, where Mr. Kino is based, and Austin.

“All of what it amounts to is looking into his transportation from the Valley up here, here back to the Valley, and how he did it and how often he’d drive himself and how often other people would take him,” Mr. Minton said. “It’s really very boring.”

Calls made to District Attorney Ronnie Earle’s office and Mr. Kino’s legislative office were not returned Friday afternoon.

Input from Around the World to President-elect Obama on Global Warming

The world is reacting to the election of President-elect Obama. I understand that Europeans, Nelson Mandela, Kenyans, Mexico and elsewhere (to name a few) were thrilled by the opportunities presented by a change in leadership in the US and the election of Obama.

As a tax-deductible, non-partisan organization, NRDC did not endorse specific candidates. But now that the election has been decided, NRDC and our partner groups are prepared to work with President-elect Obama and the new Congress to restore America’s leadership in international global warming negotiations (as I discussed earlier). So the international global warming community was also reacting positively to his election. Here are some snippets from around the “international climate world”:

Yvo de Boer, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change:

“It is impossible to advance on this important topic without the full engagement of the United States. I am very encouraged by the stated commitment of Senator Obama to the issue of climate change, and I really hope that he or his representatives can come to the climate change conference in Poznan (in western Poland) and speak to his vision of the way forward.”

R K Pachauri, Chairman of the Nobel Prize Winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change:

“US leadership is critical for mounting global efforts to meet this threat effectively. For this reason itself, apart from several others, the election of Obama is a development that should generate optimism all-round.”

Marthinus van Schalkwyk, South African Environment Minister:

“The U.S. election outcome could provide new momentum to the climate negotiations. But we should remain realistic. Obama’s plans were “not as ambitious as we would like to see.”

Connie Hedegaard, Denmark’s Climate Change Minister (Denmark will host the climate negotiations in December 2009 where negotiators agreed to reach a new accord):

Obama “has a lot to do in a very short time.”

Penny Wong, Australia’s Climate Change Minister:

“We have always said that for an effective global agreement to be in place we will need leadership from the United States and we will need the engagement particularly with China and also with India. We know that the United States is key to an effective global agreement.”

Waist deep

Frances Beinecke, President of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC):

“Barack Obama’s election is a victory for everyone who wants new solutions that will repower, refuel, and rebuild America. Through a comprehensive approach, we can create clean energy, cut our dependence on oil and create millions of new jobs. From taking on global warming to advancing clean energy, President-elect Obama has sent a clear message that he will make progress on the environmental and energy challenges that our nation faces today.”

So, a number of key international climate players are pushing for US leadership on international efforts to solve global warming. See, it isn’t just me calling for “American Leadership”.

If I missed some important comments from international climate leaders then send them my way and I’ll update the post with interesting new quotes.

Rosholt ready for WEC debut tonight

Jake Rosholt will be making his World Extreme Cagefighting debut tonight in Hollywood, Fla., and also likely his only fight in the UFC’s sister organization.

Shortly after the standout three-time NCAA champion wrestler signed with the WEC, the organization decided to discontinue its middleweight division at the end of the year.

That means the 2006 Oklahoma State graduate, who is 4-0 with three stoppages in his brief MMA career, is auditioning for his future tonight when he takes on undefeated submission artist Nissen Osterneck at Hard Rock Live. The card, which features a main event of Urijah Faber defended his featherweight crown against Mike Brown, airs live on VERSUS at 5 PDT.

“I definitely think it’s a great chance to go out there and show them that I deserve the opportunity to go into the UFC and fight for them,” Rosholt said.

“I was really looking forward to getting a few fights in with the WEC and possibly even finishing out my contract and gaining that experience. But there’s nothing I can do about it. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to fight in the UFC and just work my way up from there.”

Freida

That’s a complete 180 from where the Idaho-born Rosholt’s mindset was two years ago.

The avid hunter was burnt out of wrestling and didn’t know his future, if any, in any competitive sport. A little prodding from Ted Ehrhardt of Team Takedown (a fighting contingent of elite collegiate wrestlers) convinced Rosholt to head to Las Vegas to train at Randy Couture’s gym.

Immediately he fell in love with the sport and moved to Las Vegas to train full time shortly thereafter.

After months of work on his stand-up game and nonwrestling skills, the 26-year-old Rosholt finds himself on his biggest MMA stage to date.

“Honestly I feel like I’m gonna be the better fighter out there,” Rosholt said. “Now it’s time to prove that.”

Nebraska?Oklahoma:The Sooner Review

One word” Obliteration.

Oklahoma defeated the Nebraska Cornhuskers 62-28. This is a rivalry right? It sure didn’t seem like one.

Nebraska is definitely not the team they used to be. They basically proved that they will not be able to put up a good fight this season. What I saw from them looked like a bad case of no spirit. To even make it worse Oklahoma OBLITERATED them.

Oklahoma’s defence most certainly woke up and were able to hold back the Nebraska offence. Now yes they did give up 28 points but honestly, did they really have anything to worry about.

Sam Bradford once again showed Heisman contention while he led the offence to 62 point and showed all of the Big 12 that they are ready to fight.

With this win Oklahoma should move up a spot thanks to the Texas Tech Raiders as they beat Texas in a great contest. Now Texas Tech should move up to No. 2 and Oklahoma should move up to No. 3.

Texas Tech will face off against Oklahoma State next week. OSU is looking good but after this big win for Texas Tech, it should be able to get their morale up and beat OSU.

Oklahoma will be facing off against Texas A&M next week. A good match-up, but on paper you should see Oklahoma with the win. I’ll agree with the paper and see Oklahoma on top but stay tuned for more in-depth analysis on my weekly preview on Friday.

California propositions

In summary, Oklahoma had a fantastic week this week and will move up in the polls. Oklahoma is going to have a good match-up with Texas A&M this coming week and should win.

Oklahoma will be having Texas Tech after this coming week so expect a big game between the two. Expect Texas to not have as good as morale due from this lost so good news for the Sooners.

All signs point towards good things for the Sooners this coming week.

The Fanatic is done but stay tuned for this week’s preview.

An Inginvenient Truth

Thorarinn Ingi Jonsson?he of fake ROM bomb fame?has given an interview to the Post, the first since his conviction for mischief and subsequent probation in September. The interview’s short, but there’s a lot to take away from it: Jonsson reveals that his piece was “equally as big” in his native Reykjavik as here, but “in Toronto, it was crazy. Hate mail, and death threats, and people coming up on the street and threatening me”; he discusses some of the ways in which 9/11 was art (a comparison that, however disquieting, has been made by everyone from Jean Baudrillard to Elizabeth Wurtzel); talks about a piece of his in Reykjavik that pissed off the neighbours there; and claims that “besides the interruption to the benefit, the public response, and the way people handled the piece, I consider [the ROM piece] my finest work to date, in a certain way.” Oh, and he really likes it here and hopes to come back: “I’m so in love with Toronto. I wish they were more positive towards me.”

Obama’s Slim Chance to Win Election

albeit that opinions are like that certain furrow and everyone has harmonious, id like to voice mine.himself, i don’t think obama has any ill intent and he is my choice at present, but the odds of him in truth being elected i think are slim to none.seems obvious to me that all the cheerleading and popularity of obama is just too much of a fad as of late. he has been getting way too much coverage…well as a remainder that of mccain. yet the reality is other than the fact of the historical significance that a unscrupulous man is running for president, there is no substantial reasons for this.the resistant is in the numbers of the slide in percentages in the matrix 2 weeks toward mccain. this is in spite of obama’s edge with media exposure.i sincerely think various folks are claiming or have claimed they are prevalent to vote for obama just to be fashionable at present. seriously. i think any other presentable black man would be in the same situation right age. yet, come election period people are not going to vote their purposeful; based on the issues by oneself. they are going to vote for mccain because their secret truth is that they really don’t fancy to see a swarthy man as president.they may entertain the idea on ideals, and before-the-fact (voting day) incriminate and disavow their no matter how slight racist inclinations, but when they (the majority of registered voters) arrive at into that booth and pull that curtain and see the name of a standard wasp and a jet-black american with an arab christen they will conform and vote because of mccain.sure, it will be george bush rates b standing 3. yes, our consciousness by other peoples in the humanity will not be improved. yes, this compel not be a plebiscite on account of positive progressive change…but mccain is white and fits the stereotypical presidential welfare. the repeatedly seeking feelings akin to humming john lennon’s “imagine” won’t be in that booth at that moment. tons people will preference for who they classify with, or what their expectations are, and yes; the not so vanquished jerk of simple racism leave not be dead either.take to i said earlier, i am going to vote concerning obama. i’m a white guy myself, but i seriously do not think many of his alleged “supporters” are really fond satisfactorily to snap his switch or poke his chad.come what may in point: my mom. she has always bad mouthed the republicans. she has always claimed that only the democrats keep a day done anything to help the common man not at home. she goes as afar as to say that most “republicans” have no honest business job themselves such because of their train station in life and that they at most wish to identify themselves with america’s elite by voting gop. i assume she has a valid point. she said she is voting for john mccain this often and admits that contribute to of the reason is that he is black, but not for racism reasons as she claims he is only in his going round position (presidential nominee) because he is jet.
